Venice Carnival wows thousands of revellers

The Flight of the Angel was a visual feast for the thousands of revellers at the carnival in Venice this year.

This year student Claudia Marchiori sprinkled glitter and confetti as she descended gracefully from St Mark’s famous bell tower.

During the eighteen days of carnival, the lagoon city fills with thousands of tourists from across Italy and the world.

The carnival was once a much needed period of excess before the rigours of lent, the 40 days of fasting that traditionally precede Easter.

But today it’s an opportunity for thousands of tourists to dress up like they really are going to the ball!
