At least 60 people have been killed in Uyo, in southern Nigeria, after a church roof fell in.

Hundreds of worshippers were inside the building attending the ordination of a Bishop when it collapsed.

It is feared the number of dead could be much higher.

The church in Uyo, in the south east of the country, was still under construction and workers had apparently been rushing to finish it for Saturday’s service.

The state’s governor, who was inside the church at the time but survived the collapse, has said there will be an investigation into building safety standards.

Such incidents are not uncommon in Nigeria.

In 2014, scores of people were killed when a church collapsed in the city of Lagos.
