People in the UK are going to spend less on Christmas this year, according to one of the big three auditors.

PricewaterhouseCoopers says on average UK adults expect to spend around 331 euros on gifts this year. It is the first time the consultancy firm has done this survey, but it says other reports suggest spending was around 355-473 euros last year, so this would indicate a dip in Christmas spending.

Around 4% of people said they would not buy any presents. A quarter expect the effects of the UK’s vote to leave the European Union to have an impact on how much they spend this Christmas. However, the majority, (67%), expect no impact at all.

More than half (53) said they would make their purchases online this Christmas, compared to 43% in store.

The French are also likely to be spending less on presents this Christmas according to a different survey that suggests a household spend of less than 250 euros on average,
down on 2015’s budget.

At least 47% of the French have already begun their shop, with more than half of people polled saying they will buy gifts online this year.
