Manchester United’s Memphis Depay came off the bench to score twice and help the Netherlands beat Luxembourg 3-1 and move second in Group A of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Arjen Robben opened up the scoring for the Dutch who are now level with Sweden on seven points, three behind leaders France.

European champions Portugal kept themselves in sight of Group B leaders Switzerland following a 3-1 win over Latvia at the Estadio Algarve.

Cristiano Ronaldo hit a brace while William Carvalho scored the other lifting Portugal to nine points, three off the Swiss, who beat the Faroe Islands 2-0. Hungary beat Andorra 4-0 and are third a further two points adrift.

Dries Mertens scored a hat-trick and Romelu Lukaku a brace as the Red Devils of Belgium demolished Estonia 8-1 in Group H.

Thomas Meunier, Yannick Carrasco and captain Eden Hazard completed the rout.

Roberto Martínez’s men are now two points clear at the top of the table after second placed Greece drew 1-1 with Bosnia-Herzegovina.
