UN agencies report that all 11 hospitals in Grand’Anse are without electricity and missing staff. Two have been completely destroyed and two have been forced to close.

The five departments of Grande Anse, Sud, Nippes, Artibonite and Nord-Ouest were badly hit by the powerful storm and the city of Jeremie was completely destroyed.

Travelling to affected areas remains difficult and the full scale and nature of the disaster has still not been determined.

Officials in Haiti say the death toll is in the hundreds and continues to rise. The risk of cholera is also said to be high.
