A woman in North Australia stunned onlookers as she averted confrontation with a 4-metre-long saltwater crocodile using only her flip-flop.

In video released by local crocodile enthusiast Lyndon Anlezark, the woman and her small dog can be seen standing close to the water’s edge at Cahill’s Crossing on the East Alligator River, in Kakadu National Park.

When one of some 120 crocodiles believed to be in the river approaches the pair, the woman removes her flip flop and hits it against her hand, apparently scaring the creature enough to retreat.

The woman does not seem phased by her encounter with the dangerous predator and is pictured laughing at its reaction.

Anlezark said of the encounter:

“It’s just incredible someone would take such a risk. I don’t think she realised how dangerous this kind of behaviour is.”
