Roberto Martienz and Julen Lopetegui began their reigns as coaches of Belgium and Spain respectively on Thursday evening when their teams squared off in a friendly in Brussels.

David Silva turned out to be the key figure on the night – a hero for Spain but a nightmare for Belgium.

He scored a brace of goals to hand his side a 2-0 win.

His first came in the 34th minute when he fired through the defence and under Thibault Courtois following a cut back by Vitolo.

The Manchester City midfielder struck his second from spot after Jordan Lukaku brought down Vitolo just after the hour mark.

It was the ideal boost for Spain ahead of their opening 2018 World Cup qualifying match against Liechtenstein on Monday – the following day Belgium will look to bounce back from the defeat when they visit Cyprus.
