The Olympic flag arrived at Haneda International airport in Tokyo on Wednesday.

The governor of the Japanese capital Yuriko Koike, who was elected last month after two predecessors stepped down over spending scandals, carried the flag and vowed that the 2020 Olympics would be a success. She was joined on the flight by Japanese athletes who took part in the Rio de Janeiro Games, where Japan won 12 gold medals – their best tally since 2004.

Preparations have been hit by troubles including the scrapping of plans for the main stadium and plagiarism allegations forcing the abandonment of the original games logo. It will be the second time the Summer Olympics are held in the Japanese capital, which previously hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics.
