Russia’s two-time Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva arrived in Rio on Monday not to compete in the Games but to compete for a post on the 12-member International Olympic committee Athletes’ Commission.

Russia is currently represented by Olympic swimming champion Alexandr Popov, who is one of four outgoing commission members.

Isinbaeva faces competition from 23 other candidates in her bid to become a commissioner.

The election will take place this week and the commission’s new members will be announced after the closing of the Games.
