Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has announced his retirement from international football.

His decision brings an end to a glittering career, highlighted by winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

His final game for the Die Mannschaft was a disappointing semi-final defeat to France at Euro 2016 earlier this month – it was his seventh major tournament appearance.

His first Germany call-up came as a 19-year-old in June 2004 – he went on to score 24 international goals.

The 31-year old’s days at Manchester United might also be numbered.

Reports suggest he will be one of up to nine players to leave as new boss Jose Mourinho does an Old Trafford spring clean.
