Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Rio Olympics and will miss the end of the season in order to recover from knee surgery.

The 17 time grand slam winner said he needed more time to recover in order to prolong his career.

Her said on his website Federer said: ‘‘Considering all options after consulting with my doctors and my team, I have made the very difficult decision to call an end to my 2016 season as I need more extensive rehabilitation following my knee surgery earlier this year., if he wants to prolong his career.’‘

The 34-year-old, who is widely regarded as the best player to have graced the courts, has never won an Olympic singles title.

He lost to Britain’s Andy Murray in the final at London 2012.
