Several women and children have been dramatically rescued in China after being taken hostage by a suspected drug-dealer.

Using the captives as a human shield, CCTV footage showed the gunman’s desperate bid to flee capture.

Police say he took the group hostage, tying them around him, after entering the residential building in the city of Deyang, in China’s southern Sichaun province.

Following a tense one hour stand-off, as the authorities tried to negotiate with the gunman, one officer finally moved in to free the hostages and take down the suspect.

For the moment, it is unclear what punishment the man may face, but drug dealing does carry the death penalty in China.
