The gunman who killed 49 people and wounded dozens in an attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando visited the bar on multiple occasions, several customers have said.

Shooter Omar Mateen is also reported to have messaged several people on gay dating apps.

Mateen’s father has denied his son was gay, but one Pulse regular says the killer visited the venue to pick up men.

Jim Van Horn said: “I met him one time, at the bar. He was talking to me about his ex-wife. He used to come in the bar, on the weekends. Sometimes he would be there. Sometimes he would miss a couple of weeks and then be in again. He was regular, we consider that regular.

“He was trying to pick up people, men. He was a homosexual and he was trying to pick up men. He would walk up to them and then he would maybe put his arm around ‘em or something and maybe try to get them to dance a little bit or something. And then go over and buy a drink or something. That’s what people do at gay bars, you know? That’s what we do,” Van Horn added.

For the moment there has been no official comment by the authorities, but investigators are said to be pursuing the reports.

Mateen opened fire in the packed club on Sunday, before he was eventually shot dead by police.
