Rafa Nadal’s hopes of a record-extending tenth French Open title will have to wait another year after the Spaniard withdrew from Roland Garros with a wrist injury on Friday.

On Thursday Nadal reach round three, but subsequently pulled out as his wrist had become too painful to play.

He said: “I have a problem in my wrist. I’ve had it a couple of weeks and everyday it (the pain) is getting stronger.”

After celebrating his 200th Grand Slam victory on Thursday the 14-time Grand Slam winner was due to face compatriot Marcel Granollers on Saturday, instead Granollers will now get a free pass into the fourth round as Nadal heads home to recover.
