France defender Raphael Varane was dealt a double blow on Tuesday after he was ruled out of both the European Championships and the Champions League final.

The 23-year old has suffered a thigh injury whilst training with Real Madrid as his club prepare to face city rivals Atletico de Madrid in the final of Europe’s top club competition on Saturday.

More devastating new perhaps for Varane is the fact he will miss Euro2016 on home soil.

The French Football federation said scans had confirmed Real Madrid’s initial diagnosis and that he will be out of action for up to three weeks.

The Euros begin on June 10.

France coach Didier Deschamps has called up Sevilla’s Adil Rami to replace Varane in the national squad which will compete in Group A of the Euros with Romania, Albania and Switzerland.
