Home favourite Gianluca Brambilla has seized the Giro d’Italia leader’s jersey from a struggling Tom Dumoulin, after a stunning ride on stage eight in Umbria.

Part of an 11-man break, the Italian surged away with 25 kilometres of the 186 kilometre route to go – having launched an audacious attack on the dirt road leading up the Alpe di Monti climb.

The Etixx Quick Step rider stayed comfortably ahead of compatriot Matteo Montaguti, to cross the line one minute and six seconds ahead.

Dutchman Dumoulin lost touch with a chasing group and struggled home nearly three minutes behind Brambilla, dropping out of the top 10 overall.
