Canada’s Milos Raonic kept his composure to down local favourite Marco Cecchinato in three sets in the opening round of the Italian Open on Monday.
The 25-year-old was still made to battle hard throughout the contest and conceded the second set before finding his range in the decider, eventually winning through 6-4 4-6 6-4.
Raonic will next lock horns with Nick Kyrgios after yet another display from the young sensation. The Australian, who was up against wild card Salvatore Caruso looked in control and hit 10 aces en route to a convincing 6-1, 6-2 triumph in just over an hour.
France’s Richard Gasquet also progressed after thumping fellow countryman Julien Benneteau in straight sets.
The 29-year-old prevailed 6-3 6-0 and will next take on Andreas Seppi who beat Vasek Pospisil 7-6 7-6.
