Portugal has marked the 42nd anniversary of the carnation revolution.

The revolution started as a military coup but was soon boosted by popular support.

Today, Portugal celebrates the Carnation Revolution's 42nd birthday.

Almost no shots were fired when the population took to the streets.

Carnations were posted into the barrels of soldiers’ rifles.
