All thoughts turned to last week’s Brussels murders as Portugal entertained Belgium in Leiria in the re-arranged fixture.

Portugal had two former Man United players to thank for two first-half goals, Nani put Portugal ahead with a silky finish after 20 minutes.

Then on 40 minutes that man Cristiano Ronaldo scored a superb header.

In the second half Everton’s Romelu Lukaku headed home to get Belgium back in the game.

And that was how it ended.

Portugal 2-1 Belgium.

Germany were keen to get back to winning ways against Italy in Munich following defeat against England last Friday.

The Mannschaft took the lead thanks to the precise placement of Toni Kroos.

Mario Götze headed a second on the stroke of half-time.

Defender Jonas Hector made it three to put the game beyond the Azzuri.

Mesut Oezil then scored from the spot for 4-0.

Italy grabbed a consolation goal in the last 10 minutes.

Germany beat Italy for the first time in 21 years.

Germany 4-1 Italy.

Leicester City’s N’golo Kante spread the word to give France the lead against Russia in Paris.

Andre-Pierre Gignac made it two for the home side.

Alexander Kokorin got Russia on the scoresheet.

One of the Premier League’s players of the season, West Ham’s Dimitri Payet slotted home a gem of a free-kick.

Russia were not finished Yuri Zhirkov scored for the visitors only for Kingsley Coman to restore the home sides two goal cushion.

France 4-2 Russia.
