The peloton hit the sun- kissed snow-covered mountains in stage three of the Tour of Catalonia on the trek from Girona to the mountain top finish at La Molina.

The peloton hit the sun- kissed snow-covered mountains in stage three of the Tour of Catalonia on the 172.1 km trek from Girona to the mountain top finish at La Molina.

As the breakaways were controlled by team Sky it was the 2013 winner, Ireland’s Dan Martin, who attacked near the end of the final climb.

Martin took on the big boys in their arena Contador and Nairo Quintana tried to snuff out the Irishman to no avail.

Martin claimed the stage and took the leaders jersey. Nacer Bouhani who led the race going into the stage had to retire at the halfway point due to illness.

Alberto Contador came second and is six seconds behind Martin at the head of the race.
