Norway’s Edvald Boasson Hagen timed his sprint perfectly to clinch the fifth and penultimate stage of the Tour of Oman in Muscat on Saturday.

The 28-year-old, who has been one of the strongest riders in these early weeks of the 2016 season, kept up with the pace of Romain Bardet and Vincenzo Nibali, and was expertly teed up by teammate Nathan Haas in the final kilometres to seal the win ahead of Belgium’s Greg Van Avermaet and Marco Canola of Italy.

It was Van Avermaet’s fifth finish inside the top five during the Tours of Qatar and Oman, giving him a major boost ahead of Sunday’s final stage, a 130.5km trek from Muscat to the Matrah Corniche.
