Scientists have been trying to detect gravitational waves, or ripples in the fabric of space-time, ever since Albert Einstein published his theory about their existence 100 years ago.

Today, the game-changing discovery of these waves has been announced by the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO), the US-based LIGO labs, and the VIRGO Collaboration.
