French coastguards are scratching their heads as to how to prevent a freighter loaded with timber from Gabon from wrecking itself on the Atlantic coast.

The “Modern Express” has a 50-degree list after it is thought the cargo shifted, and is some 300 kms from the port of La Rochelle. Anti-pollution ships and tugs are standing off waiting for a chance to board.
