Toyota remains the world’s top carmaker for the fourth year running.

Its sales worldwide last year totaled 10.15 million vehicles.

That put it ahead of Volkswagen which sold 9.93 million vehicles.

US carmaker General Motors was in third place with 9.8 million sold.

VW had been on track to lead the pack with faster sales during the early part of the year but suffered a drop in annual sale because of the emissions scandal.

At the same time Toyota said it was considering buying out the rest of Daihatsu – it already owns 51.2 percent.

Full control of Daihatsu could help Toyota leverage the lower-cost brand better and cut procurement costs for Daihatsu.

Last year, Daihatsu was the weakest link in the Toyota group, which also includes the Toyota and Lexus brands and truck maker Hino Motors. Global sales for Daihatsu slid 13.3 percent in 2015. That pushed total Toyota group sales 0.8 percent lower.

Toyota also denied a report that it was in partnership talks with Suzuki.
