Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been suspended from the France national team due to his alleged attempt to blackmail international teammate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.

The president of the French Football Federation (FFF) Noel Le Graet announced the suspension at a news conference on Thursday afternoon.

Le Graet added that Benzema will not play for the national side until the case is resolved.

The 27-year-old – who was put under formal investigation by a French judge last month – could now miss out on the European Championships which take place next year in his native France.

But, that is the least of his problems because if found guilty Benzema could be facing upwards of five years in prison.
