Manchester United woke up with a Champions League migraine on Wednesday following their group stage exit on their return to the competition after a year’s absence.

Their defeat against Wolfsburg and a win for PSV Eindhoven against CSKA Moscow on the final day of Group B action saw Louis Van Gaal’s men eliminated.

After seeing his side vanish from Europe’s elite club competition for this season, Van Gaal said: “At the moment I cannot defend myself because we are out of the Champions, of Champions League and every word what I say is a wrong word, I think.”

Having also been eliminated in the fourth round of the League Cup by Championship side Middlesbrough, United are now hunting silverware from the FA Cup, the Premier League and now the Europa League.

And failure to win one of these will surely raise more questions over Van Gaal’s future at a club that has suffered yet another European reality check.
