Real Madrid confirmed their last 16 spot in the Champions League as Group A winners after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 4-3 on Wednesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo hit a brace while Luca Modric and Daniel Carvajal also scored as the Spaniards held off a spirited late charge from the Ukranians for the win.

PSG go through as group runners up following their 5-0 thrashing of Malmo.

Manchester United missed the chance to qualify for the next phase of the competition with one Group B game spare after being held to a goalless stalemate at home by PSV Eindhoven.

The Germans of Wolfsburg now top the group courtesy of a 2-0 away win at CSKA Moscow who are eliminated.

Utd and Wolfsburg meet in the final round of matches next month.

Antoine Griezmann scored both goals as Atletico Madrid ensured safe passage into the last 16 from Group C with a 2-0 victory over Galatasaray.

Joining the Spaniards in the next round are Benfica who – through two goals from Raul Jimenez – came from behind to draw with competition newcomers Astana – a single point enough to send Rui Vitoria’s men through.

Juventus beat already qualified Manchester City 1-0 to join the English side in the knockout stages.

A 1-0 win for the Italians on the night however put them in the driving seat to finish as Group D winners – Mario Mandzukic with the only goal of the night there.

Eliminated Borussia Moenchengladbach beat Sevilla 4-2 to move into third and the Europa league spot.
