The Kremlin has denied claims on Sir Elton John’s Instagram account that Vladimir Putin ‘reached out’ by telephone to the singer – who had said he wanted to talk to the Russian President about gay rights.

Was there a real call? Or was it a hoax call?

Either way, Sir Elton, one of the UK’s best known musicians and gay celebrities, who has two sons with husband David Furnish, was keen to discuss what he called Putin’s ‘ridiculous’ stance on gay rights.

A law banning so-called homosexual propaganda was passed in Russia in June 2013. Activists say it has fuelled anti-gay abuse, discrimination and violence.
