An enormous car bomb has been detonated in a city in Northern Syria.

At least ten people have been killed and dozens more injured in the explosion in Latakia.

The coastal stronghold is loyal to President Bashar-al-Assad.

It has so far escaped the worst of the violence that has ravaged Syria during its four years of civil war.

Bomb detonated near a school

The bomb was detonated in a main square.

State media say a van containing at least half a ton of explosives was left near a school.

“This is a despicable criminal act,” said one bystander.“These people have no religion and no faith. There is nothing more to say.”

No one has admitted being behind the attack. State media have blamed anti-government insurgents.

Elsewhere, two students have died in a mortar attack on Damascus University.
