Spain’s Alejandro Valverde clinched a victory on home turf when he won stage 4 of the Vuelta a España.
The Movistar rider completed the 209.6km route from Estepona to Vejer de la Frontera in five hours seven minutes and 30 seconds.
BMC’s Samuel Sanchez led with just 500 metres to the finish but Nicolas Roche of Team Sky jumped ahead. José Gonçalves from Caja Rural.Seguros was also in the mix but Alejandro Valverde was ready to power ahead with just several hundred metres remaining.
The Spaniard left Peter Sagan of Tinkoff-Saxo in second followed by Katusha’s Daniel Moreno Fernandez in third. Roche and Gonçalves finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Orica rider Esteban Chaves from Colombia remains overall leader going into Stage 5, a 167.3km route from Rota to Alcala de Guadaíra.
