A major fire at one of Europe’s biggest science museums, the Cite des Sciences in Paris, has been brought under control after raging for six hours and threatening a large area.

A massive plume of black smoke could be seen over the area in northern Paris early on Thursday, as 120 firefighters spent six hours tackling the blaze.

The cause was unclear but fire alarms at the sprawling site had been switched off because of building work.

Two firefighters were slightly hurt.
