Luca Paolini is on his way home and out of the Tour de France. The Italian cyclist has been provisionally suspended after he failed a dope test.

The Katusha rider tested positive for cocaine according to his team and the International Cycling Union – the sports governing body which said the sample was collected on Tuesday.

The drug is seen as a stimulant and banned in competition.

The 38-year-old was acting as one of the lieutenants for top sprinter Alexander Kristoff in the Tour.

It is the first time in two years that a rider has failed a dope test.
