It was a golden start for Great Britain on the first day of action in the swimming pool at the European Games in Baku.

16-year-old Abbie Wood won the women’s 400m individual medley title with a time of 4 minutes 41.97 seconds.

Ilaria Cusinato of Italy took silver and Serbia’s Anja Crevar bronze.

Another GB gold came when Duncan Scott, Martyn Walton, Daniel Speers and Cameron Kurle triumphed in the men’s 4×100m Freestyle Relay.

Italy and favourites Russia rounded off the podium.

Holly Hibbott made it three GB gold from eight on offer on day one of swimming by winning the 800m freestyle.

Ukraine’s Andriy Yagodka upset the form books to beat favourite Tiberiu Dolniceanu and win the men’s individual sabre title.

Yagodka held off his Romanian rival 15-10 in the showpiece match.

Olympic silver medallist Ana Maria Branza took top spot in the women’s individual epee after beating Russian Yana Zvereva in the final

Branza, the world number two, came from behind to strike gold winning through 15-11.
