Police in India say more than 80 people have died after drinking toxic alcohol in Mumbai.

It affected residents of a shanty town in the Malad area of the city.

More than 30 other people are being treated in hospitals. There are fears the death toll could rise further.

Five people have been detained in connection with the deaths.

Toxic alcohol deaths are not uncommon in India, where people often to choose to drink cheap liquor.

In January, at least 29 people died after drinking toxic alcohol in Uttar Pradesh state.
