Former Turkish Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel has died at the age of 90.

In a career that stretched over nearly half a century he served as the country’s premier seven times, later becoming its president ,

He dominated Turkish politics during decades of violence and economic stagnation and even made a come back after military rule

He was publicly known by the nickname “Father,” and for uttering phrases such as “Yesterday is yesterday, today is today,” when referring to his making of statements at different times that contradicted each other.

He died early Wednesday of a respiratory infection in an Ankara, hospital .
