A man has been shot dead by police in Singapore outside a hotel where a high-level regional security summit was taking place.

The US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter was among those attending but the incident is thought to be unconnected and drugs-related.

Police say they opened fire after a car failed to stop for security checks and crashed through barricades.

Two people were detained.
