Nebraska has become the 19th US state to abolish the death penalty in favour of life imprisonment.

At 30 to 19, the vote overrode a veto by the state’s Republican senator.

Previous ballots to retroactively apply the decision were upheld.

Nebraska has not executed anybody since 1997.
