Carlo Anchelotti has been fired by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez following a trophyless season for Los Blancos.

The Italian manager led Real Madrid to the side’s 10th European Cup last season as well as the Copa del Rey, the Club World Cup and the Super Cup.

But in his second season in charge he and his men came up short in La Liga, Champions League and Kings Cup.

And after a meeting on Monday by the club’s board, Perez announced the axe has fallen.

The 55-year-old is the ninth manager in 12 years to be sacked by Perez.

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is favourite to replace Ancelotti who has been supported by fans and players alike in recent days – although that didn’t stop Perez showing him the exit door.

The new manager will be announced next week.
