Spain’s Mikel Landa produced a superb display to clinch the 15th Stage of the Giro d’Italia while fellow countryman Alberto Contador extended his overall lead following a gruelling 165km trek to Madonna Di Campiglio on Sunday.

Contador, who snatched a six-second time bonus at an intermediate sprint, now leads second placed Fabio Aru of Italy by 2 minutes and 35 seconds with Costa Rica’s Andrey Amador currently lying in third place.

With only a few kilometres to go before the finish-line, Yury Trofimov launched an attack but Astana’s Landa countered and held off the Katusha rider to seal the win.

The Russian came home second ahead of Contador, who is bidding to become the first man since Marco Pantani in 1998 to complete the Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double in the same year.
