Despite qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Champions League there is a sombre mood hanging over Real Madrid.
Real’s Champions League victory against Shalke was a result of their performance in Germany, not in fortress Bernabéu, where the Germans came agonisingly close to knocking them out with 4-3 away win.
Domestic form is also on the wane
Coach Carlo Ancelotti gave a stony faced reaction to the result as he addressed the world’s media: “I think we deserved the whistles from the crowd. It is going to motivate us for the next matches. I still rely on this team and the squad because I know what they are able to achieve.”
Real now face Levante in Madrid next up and then a defining fixture as they travel to Barcelona on March 22, win and everything in the garden is rosy, lose and the knives will be out.
