Two hundred skiers had a narrow escape after becoming stranded in cable cars buffeted by 130km per hour-strong winds in the Italian Dolomites.

All were winched to safety after the gondola system ground to a halt when a tree fell onto the cable, prompting fears it could have snapped at any moment.
