Israeli police say at least five people have been injured after a suspected Palestinian motorist rammed his vehicle into them.

It happened on a main road in East Jerusalem, close to an Israeli border police station, during the Jewish holiday of Purim.

The driver is said to have got out of the car wielding a knife, before being shot by a security guard.

“The terrorist himself drove through a pedestrian area and hit at least five border police women at the junction,” said Micky Rosenfeld, an Israeli police spokesman.

“This is in fact the same junction in Jerusalem where there was a terrorist attack several months ago. The terrorist was in fact shot at the scene and apprehended.”

There was a spate of similar attacks last October and November, which killed three people and wounded around a dozen more.

Although tensions flared both before and after the Gaza war, it has been relatively calm in recent months.
