The Volkswagen Passat has been named European Car Of The Year 2015 on the eve of the annual Geneva Motor Show.
The Passat beat off competition from six other finalists, including the highly-rated Citroen C4 Cactus, which came in second. The Mercedes Benz C-Class was third.
The Volkswagen Passat won by 90 points, one of the largest ever margins.
The company has had good run in the awards in recent years. The VW Polo won in 2010 and the VW Golf took the honours in 2013.
This latest prize should help the German company achieve its stated aim of becoming the world’s largest car maker in terms of sales by 2018.
In 2014 the company sold over 10 million cars, moving it closer to overtaking the world’s present number one, Toyota.
