Hamas has described an attack by Israel which killed at least one Hamas member as a “grave escalation.”

A firefight erupted along the border with the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

The Israeli army claims one of their border patrols came under attack from snipers and they responded with fire “from the ground and the air.”

Hamas claims the Israeli army made the first move, trying to “infiltrate Gaza’s borders and fire on citizens,” which prompted Hamas to respond.

The dead man has been named as as Tayseer Asmairi.

The two sides signed a ceasefire at the end of August after a devastating 50 day war which left more than 2000 Palestinians dead and more than 11,000 injured. At least 73 Israelis – 67 soldiers and six civilians – were also killed.

In recent days there has been an escalation of clashes.
