Playful cats, cute lion cubs and majestic white rhinos make up some of euronews’ pick of top critters from 2014.

We start our journey with some four-legged friends that have come to dominate the online world. First up is one of the stars of a new ‘cat cafe’ in California, founded by cat lover Ann Dunn, where for the price of a donation and the cost of a coffee you can spend up to one hour with a furry feline from a local shelter.

Our second cat caught on tape this year is viral super star Oskar. Oskar has earned a place in St. Louis, Missouri Contemporary Art Museum, where curious cat enthusiasts filled the museum to capacity in order to watch YouTube gems like: “Oskar the Blind Kitten Versus Hair Dryer – Epic Cat Battle.”

If bigger cats are more your thing, next on our year review are three adorable white lion cubs. The cubs, born in a safari park in Sevastopol, Crimea, are not just adored for their charming frolics, according to the Global White Lion Protection Trust they are a “genetic rarity”.

Another rare species which was brought into the spotlight this year was the northern white rhino. Pictured in our video is Najin, who is housed at Ol Pejeta Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. She is one of only five northern white rhinoceros left in the world, after a male at San Diego Zoo Safari Park died earlier this year.

2014 was undoubtedly a year for the furry stars of the screen. Did your favourite clip of the year make the cut?
