There has been a dramatic development in an anti-mafia case in Italy.

Financial police say they have seized assets worth more than 100 million euros from a businessman arrested over claims of mafia activity.

Over the past few weeks a dozen people have been taken into custody in raids in the capital, where it is alleged the mafia has taken over lucrative City of Rome contracts.

Assets seized in the latest raids include stakes in companies, plots of land and at least 180 properties.

The businessman, Cristiano Guarnera, is one of 100 people under investigation.

Another person implicated in the inquiry is former centre-right mayor Gianni Alemanno.
