Israeli soldiers have shot and killed a Palestinian man during clashes in the West Bank, according to the military.

It said soldiers had been trying to make an arrest at the Qalandiya refugee camp north of Jerusalem when Palestinians threw explosives at them and fired shots.

The dead man has been identified by Palestinian officials as 22-year-old Mahmoud Edwan.

They said the army operation had provoked the clashes.

The Israeli army said it had fired back when attacked by
what it called “terrorists”, hitting one of them.

Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have been high in recent months, mostly over a disputed holy site in Jerusalem.

The West Bank has been calmer.

It’s thought Israeli security officials reportedly believe the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been trying to keep the lid on violence while pushing for a UN resolution on Israeli occupation.
