Brazil’s footballing legend Pele was discharged from a hospital in Sao Paulo on Tuesday.

The 74-year-old three-time World Cup winner was admitted a month ago to undergo kidney stones surgery and treatment for a urinary tract infection.

Pele appeared in good spirits speaking to the press and joked he is now preparing to play for Brazil at the Rio Olympics and added he was not afraid of dying thanks to his birth town of Three Hearts.

He said: “I was worried, of course. But I can’t say I was afraid of dying because I am a man of three hearts, I won’t die easily. But the doctor told me, look, you might be a man of three hearts, but you have a heart back there that if you’re not more careful you’re gonna ruin.”

Walking gingerly due to hip surgery last year Pele now faces 10 days on the sidelines for a bit of rest and relaxation as well as a series of physiotherapy sessions.

A recall to the Brazil squad might by pushing it though.
