The New York Cosmos signalled their intent on a return to topflight Major League Soccer after unveiling former Real Madrid star Raul as their newest signing.

The 37-year-old signed a multi-year contract with the iconic club that now plays in the second tier North American Soccer League.

He will also act as technical director for the club’s new academy, which will open next year.

At his presentation Raul said: “My focus will be on the field helping the team win many games and to pass along my experience to the younger players. I will also help to develop the structure of our youth academy.

During his 16-year spell at Real he won six La Liga titles, four Spanish Super Cups, and three Champions League crowns.

He scored 323 goals in 741 matches before moving to Schalke in 2010 and more recently Doha club Al Saad.

He is now set to join an elite club of Cosmos stars that include Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto and Pele who all played for the original team in the ’70s.
