An appeal court in New York has rejected a bid to have human rights extended to a chimpanzee.

The case was brought by an animal rights advocate on behalf of Tommy, a 26 year-old chimp, who lives in a cage in upstate New York.

The judges decided that chimpanzees cannot be submitted to societal responsibilities or be held legally responsible fo their actions.

The lawyer who brought the case says he will now ask New York’s top court to hear the case.
